National Hockey League (NHL) Exemption Hotline: Best Players of the Week
Tuesday's "Frozen Madness" may have been a bit too exciting for viewers. Sixteen games in one night. So many choices, not enough screens to watch them all. (Yes, there were broadcasts around the arena all night. I mean those who prefer the old-fashioned channel-flipping way.)
Fantasy can be daunting at times. You may decide on which players to pick, but the choices seem endless. The key is to focus on the categories you want to improve on, then move on to other areas of interest. To help you search, here are some currently underrated fantasy hockey players.

Forwards
Ryan Hartman, Minnesota Wild (Yahoo: 46%)
By the time you read this article, Hartman is likely not available in your league, as this often happens when someone is... (1871 chars omitted)... For a player with only a 3% roster, this sounds acceptable, and he also contributed 15 shots, 9 hits, and 4 blocks.
Defensemen
Philip Hronek, Vancouver Canucks (Yahoo: 46%)
Hronek has been a mainstay for most of his career, but in Vancouver, he gets significantly more ice time. He turns over 25 minutes a night into significant cross-category activities, with 4 assists, 12 shots, 10 blocks, 5 hits, and 6 assists. Hronek may lose some fantastic matchups as he plays a secondary power role, though not affecting his offensive prospects alongside Quinn Hughes.
Neal Pionk, Winnipeg Jets (Yahoo: 28%)
Since Josh Morrissey became the offensive defensive mainstay for Winnipeg, Pionk's days have become tougher, but four consecutive seasons with at least 32 points is nothing to complain about. He has five scoreless games out of seven, with three assists in the other two games, including Tuesday's match against St. Louis. Pionk also contributes physically, averaging two hits and one block. While he doesn't have many shots on goal, his performance compared to other players and his history should earn him more recognition.
Travis Sanheim, Philadelphia Flyers (Yahoo: 24%)
The discussion about Hronek can be repeated on Sanheim, although the latter takes on more responsibility as an adult. He has put up impressive numbers with 1 goal, 7 assists, 16 shots, and 13 blocks, averaging 26 minutes and 12 seconds per game, including nearly 6 minutes on the power play. The Flyers are competitive this season, with Sanheim being a key player, but his value has significantly decreased compared to similar fantasy blue-line players.
Juuso Valimaki, Arizona Coyotes (Yahoo: 5%)
A defensive player who scored 34 points last year - 12 of which came in strong offensive situations - is not often noticed, but Valimaki has found himself in this position after Arizona acquired Sean Dea and Matt Dumba in the summer. So far, 3 assists may not be impressive, but all 3 assists are on the power play. Valimaki hasn't done much elsewhere, and his ice time isn't outstanding, but he has made contributions in crucial areas, appearing to be part of the Coyotes' long-term plans.
Goalies
Peter Mrazek, Chicago Blackhawks (Yahoo: 17%)
Based on the 28th-ranked GAA and no significant back-end additions during the offseason, the Blackhawks' defensive performance hasn't been great. It's too early to say, but they're "only" allowing 3 goals per game. So far, Mrazek and Kevin Lankinen have been alternating starts, both delivering decent stats, but the former is busier, with no fewer than 36 shots in four appearances and a 92.5% save percentage. Chicago may not be the top destination for goaltenders, but Mrazek can provide short-term help (future Lankinen can too).
Jack Allen, Manitoba Canadiens (Yahoo: 16%)
Similar to last season, Montreal ranked 29th in goals against, maintaining the status quo defensively. Sam Montembeault is considered the number one, starting back-to-back games. Allen then defeated the Hat Tricks at home and blocked the Sabres in Buffalo. Cayden Primeau is also in the mix, though he had a poor season debut on Tuesday. Even if Montembeault bounces back with a win on Thursday, Allen should continue to lead and represent a useful candidate in save-counting formats.
